Through the Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass (1871) is Lewis Carroll’s sequel to Alice in Wonderland. Here Alice enters another fantasy world, this time by climbing through a mirror. She finds that logic is backward on the other side, and that people speak backwards too!

This novel is rich with symbolism. Perhaps most memorable is Alice’s gradual move across a giant chess board; with its rigid rules, the game is symbolic of fate. Forty-nine illustrations showing the chess game, characters, and more are in the 2019 edition.
