A first step in sudden homeschooling is establishing a routine. A routine or schedule brings comfort to adults and kids alike. It can also speed up your lesson planning and help ensure that all academic areas get covered. Sample homeschool schedules and a blank template are downloadable below.Â
Notes about the sample homeschool schedules:
- A favorite setup uses Week A and Week B lineups. This lets you maintain a routine but also diversify subject areas across two weeks. It’s a good way to go beyond the so-called basics and include subjects such as music and foreign language. Also in the “Weekly Plan B” example, field trip time is included.Â
- These sample homeschool schedules show full-day routines… but in the beginning, half-day routines could suffice. You might briefly hold off on science lessons, for example, to avoid stressing yourself out as a new homeschool teacher. Also consider partnering with another homeschooler or online service to deliver a full day of lessons.Â
- Elements of the schedule are strategically placed. For example, we start with English class because it can always begin with journaling… an effective way to ease into the school day. (Get writing prompts here!) Of course, you might find that other routines work better for your household.
