The Birchbark House

The Birchbark House begins a five-book series about a seven-year-old girl and her Ojibwe community. It’s set in 1847 near Gichigami (the water now known as Lake Superior) and moves through four seasons.

Notably for modern readers, a smallpox pandemic ravages the community. Other themes of the book are family, nature, and cooperation.

A glossary of Ojibwe terms is included.
