Julie of the Wolves

Julie of the Wolves is realistic fiction about an Inuk girl who becomes lost in the Arctic wild. 

Julie, also called Miyax, was engaged to marry at age 13. When her husband becomes abusive, Julie tries escaping to California. Lost along the way, she befriends a pack of wolves who become like family. When she gets the opportunity to return to her people and their traditions, will she stay with the wolves or go? 

This young adult novel won the Newbery Award in 1973. It was inspired by the author’s research on wolves in Barrow, Alaska.
