Island of the Blue Dolphins

After her island-based tribe flees from invaders, Karana lives alone for years on the two-mile stretch of land.

In this Newbery Medal winner, the heroine witnesses the deaths of her loved ones, fights wild animals and humans, and wonders whether she’ll ever see her tribe again.

This dramatic tale is inspired by the real-life adventure of Juana Maria, a Native American woman who faced a similar situation and was stranded for nearly 20 years.
